Description
1 Pace Plaza, completed in 1969, is the flagship building complex of Pace University in New York City, specifically designed for Pace. It is located directly across from City Hall and adjacent to the Brooklyn Bridge, and houses most of the classrooms, administrative offices, a 2,000-square-foot student union, the 750-seat community theater of the Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts, and an 18-floor high-rise known as Maria's Tower. Floors 5-17 of Maria's Tower houses approximately 500 freshmen residents and the 18th floor holds university administrative offices.
1 Pace Plaza is on the former site of the New York Tribune building. It was built during the urban renewal project of the 1960s known as the Brooklyn Bridge Title I Project, which included the South Bridge Towers on Gold Street, the Beekman Hospital (now New York Downtown Hospital) and the World Trade Center.
The Woolworth Building was the tallest tower in the world when built in 1913. The tower was dubbed 'Cathedral of Commerce', due to the many medieval-style ornaments that embellish the building.
Frank Winfield Woolworth, the owner of the 'five and dime' Woolworth retail chain was an admirer of European Gothic architecture. He was especially impressed by the neo-Gothic Houses of Parliament in London. When he needed a new office building for the headquarters of his company, he asked Cass Gilbert to build a Gothic tower with plenty of windows. Gilbert, who had studied in Europe, designed a U-shaped skyscraper with a steel frame and Gothic ornamentation.

Joann, I love the black and white interpretation, and it really adds to the mood set by the low clouds in this image. Nicely done!! :) f/v

Thank you Mick! I'm finally going through my New York Series of negatives and scanning them hi-res. It's just something how all the old memories start coming back...I remember this exact shoot on this day:)
