Description
A walk through Boston's Public Gardens in the height of the Autumn season reveals beautiful colors along the pond with dock and suspension bridge in background.
The Lagoon Bridge was designed by William Gibbons Preston and built in 1861. Constructed of gray granite, the bridge was originally of the suspension type and the wooden deck was held up by the decorative wrought iron chain affair.
The steps at all four locations have been rebuilt to their original configuration, complete with bronze railings. The project also involved the restoration of the iron fence which surrounds the entire Public Garden and is over one mile in length. The historic fence has been rehabilitated to a first class restored condition. The restored bridge was rededicated by the City of Boston in October, 1996.
